DAY 53
Well today has come and gone fairly quickly. As you can imagine you have a lot of time to think about things out here. I spent most of the day thinking about how I'm going to sort out my finances when I get back. I looked at my watch and over 4 hours had gone past. Great I thought! Conditions have slowed a little the wind that has helped me over the past few days was on holiday today. Fortunately there was still some following current with me. I took another dip in the big blue today just to clean the bottom again. There was more to be scrubbed off than I thought there would be. I need to do it a bit more frequently now I think. Not sure if it was just in my head or not but the good ship Speedo did feel a little easier to pull through the water after. Not sure how well I'll sleep tonight as my AIS has picked up a cargo ship coming straight towards me. It's 70 miles away at the moment but it will only take 7 hours to get to me. Fingers crossed it doesn't come to close. Someone sent me a txt today saying "Howdy Ketch can you let me know if you get this" Yes I did get it but I don't know who it's from as there is no name or email address?? Another day bites the dust. Captain Ketch
DAY 55
Yesterday I spent the whole day on the para anchor. These magical trade winds have not showed up yet but I'm still living in the hope that they will. Fortunately today was a little better and I was able to make some progress. Someone asked me a while ago if rowing across the Atlantic was harder or easier than I thought it would be. I can't really answer that yet I'm still thinking about it and have a long way to go. I always knew it would be hard. Something I didn't expect at all was just how poor the weather would be. I'd heard stories about being blown across and how easy it would be. Believe you me that is not the case at all! Well not this year anyway. On the plus side the good ship Speedo is still floating and I'm still going so all is good. I can say that ocean rowing is a game of luck and patience. Lots of patience! I don't think I've ever seen a brighter moon than on tonight's rowing shift. It really did light up the whole sky. I tried to take a picture but it came out rubbish. The wildlife scene has been pretty rubbish too. Haven't seen anything interesting for a while now. My watch that stopped working has come back to life all of a sudden so that's cool. I've now started rationing food as it's clear to me I'm going to be out here for longer than 90 days. I tried to catch some fish the other day just to see if I could but they're a lot smarter than I thought. They just look at the hook probably thinking, I don't think so mate we're not that stupid! Captain Ketch
DAY 57
Nothing overly exciting to report from the good ship Speedo today. Yesterday and today have actually come and gone quite quickly. The miles are slowly ticking by. Today I was rowing away when all of a sudden I sensed a strong smell of vinegar. Just like you get at the fish and chip shop. It's funny because it was only the other day I thought I could smell freshly cut grass clippings. Perhaps my mind is starting to play tricks on me. I did crave fish and chips for a while though which was rather irritating knowing full well I only had a rat pack to eat.
The forecast is looking good for the next six days so hopefully can get a good stint in before the next batch of nasty stuff comes my way.
If anyone is up to anything interesting back home do let me know as it can get rather boring out here at times. Lots of blue to look at though! Captain Ketch
