British Swimming Hero Rebecca Adlington Joins Team Speedo
Double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington was today announced as the latest athlete to join Speedo’s impressive list of swimming greats, sponsored by the world’s leading swimwear brand.
The signing follows an incredible 2008 which saw the Mansfield athlete blow the competition out of the water at both national and world levels to become the first British woman to win an Olympic gold medal since Anita Lonsbrough in 1960.
Adlington forced the international swimming circuit to sit up and take notice at April’s FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Manchester with a breathtaking gold medal in the women’s 800m freestyle and a silver medal with the GB women’s 200m relay team. Continuing her domination of women’s 400m and 800m freestyle, Rebecca swam to victory in Beijing securing two Olympic gold medals and rewrote history by smashing swimming’s longest-standing world record in the women’s 800m. The 19-year-old is now poised to make waves at the 13th FINA World Championships, Roma 2009, and is already focussing on defending her crown in London 2012.
